Early travelers described Rhodes as a town of two parts: a castle or high town (Collachium) and a lower city. Today Rhodes town—sometimes referred to as Ródos town—is still a city of two parts: the Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage site that incorporates the high town and lower city, and the modern metropolis, or New Town, spreading away from the walls that encircle the Old Town. The narrow streets of the Old Town are for the most part closed to cars and are lined with Orthodox and Catholic churches, Turkish houses (some of which follow the ancient orthogonal plan), and medieval public buildings with exterior staircases and facades elegantly constructed of well-cut limestone from Lindos. Careful reconstruction in recent years has enhanced the harmonious effect.
Exclusive Virtuoso Voyages Experience:
"Medieval Rhodes & the Jewish Quarter: A Journey Through Time The Medieval City of Rhodes".
Rhodes is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, renowned worldwide for its historical significance. Less known, however, is the Jewish Quarter that once flourished within its ancient walls. Our exclusive half-day tour offers a unique opportunity to explore both the surprisingly well-preserved medieval buildings and the rich Jewish heritage of Rhodes Old Town. As you wander its narrow, winding lanes, your knowledgeable guide will share the history of the Jewish community that made Rhodes their home. Along the way, you’ll visit notable landmarks including Alhadeff Park and Alhadeff Street, the Square of the Martyred Jews with its seahorse fountain, and the Holocaust Memorial. You’ll also explore the oldest synagogue in Greece, the Street of the Knights, which is the best-preserved medieval street in Europe, and visit the 14th-century Palace of the Grand Master. Today, it houses a museum featuring medieval furniture, elaborate mosaics, and archaeological exhibits from Rhodes. To conclude your tour, visit the Archaeological Museum of the Medieval Town, where the island’s layered history comes to life through its impressive collection of artifacts.
