After a couple of laidback days at sea, Tortola in the British Virgin Islands appears on the horizon, a place beloved by snorkelers and divers for its dazzling reef life. Francophone St Barts is our next stop, to see and be seen in the glamorous boutiques of Gustavia. Learn about Creole life at the museum in Pointe-à-Pitre, Guadeloupe, before we reach Kingstown, St Vincent, where one of the oldest botanical gardens in the western hemisphere awaits. In Castries, Saint Lucia, the modern cathedral with its murals of black saints is a must-visit, while sights in Fort-de-France in Martinique include a statue of Napoleon’s Josephine. Basseterre in St Kitts is the gateway to UNESCO-listed Brimstone Fort National Park, then it’s time to explore the pretty, pastel-colored streets of San Juan, Puerto Rico. We move now to the British Virgin Islands and Jost Van Dyke. Eagle rays and tarpon are among the fish to see, and don’t miss Bubbly Pool, a natural hot tub created by the sea on the east coast. St John’s, Antigua, is next on our list, the gateway to the beautifully preserved Nelson’s Dockyard. This extraordinary complex of buildings dates from the Georgian era and is where the English admiral sheltered his fleet. Today, it’s where yachties congregate as they pass through.
