A Lord of the Rings Pilgrimage to New Zealand: There and Back Again
Nov 23 - Dec 5, 2027
I need to tell you something personal before I tell you about this trip.
I own a second edition of The Lord of the Rings. Not a reprint, a second edition. It sits on my shelf alongside what I consider the greatest story ever told, in my favorite books and my favorite films. And the first time I traveled to New Zealand, stood on those hillsides, breathed that air, looked out at landscapes I had only ever seen on screen, it changed my life. Literally. It's the reason I became a travel advisor. It's why Flights & Fables exists.
This trip has been on my bucket list since the moment I first saw The Fellowship of the Ring. Not just visiting New Zealand. Not just seeing Hobbiton. A real, full, unhurried pilgrimage across both islands, North and South, to every significant Middle-earth location, with a small group of fellow fans who feel the same way I do about Tolkien's world.
In late November 2027, we're doing it.
This is a 13-day journey built from scratch for Lord of the Rings fans. Every stop, every experience, every detail has been chosen because it matters to the story.
We arrive in Auckland and that same afternoon step into Weta Workshop Unleashed, an immersive behind-the-scenes experience from the legendary team that brought Middle-earth to the screen. Day 2 takes us underground into the Waitomo Glowworm Caves, a cathedral of limestone lit by thousands of tiny living lights, Elvish stars, every one of them. Day 3 is the moment many of us have waited a lifetime for: the Hobbiton Movie Set in Matamata, where we have the full Behind-the-Scenes experience including a banquet lunch at the Millhouse, a drink at the Green Dragon Inn, and a private tour of the Art Department workshop where the magic is still being made.
From there we travel south to the volcanic wastelands of Tongariro National Park, where Mount Ngauruhoe became Mount Doom, before arriving in Wellington, the creative capital of Middle-earth. We spend a full day on a private Lord of the Rings filming locations tour through Wellington: the Outer Shire where Frodo hid from the Black Riders, the ancient rainforest of Rivendell, the Gardens of Isengard, the quarry that became Helm's Deep and Minas Tirith, and an insider's visit to Weta Workshop.
Then something truly special: we board the iconic Interislander Ferry through the breathtaking Marlborough Sounds, and then board the Coastal Pacific train from Picton to Christchurch, one of the most scenic rail journeys in the world, hugging the Pacific coastline through rugged mountains and vineyards. From Christchurch, a full-day 4WD expedition takes us across the Canterbury Plains to Mount Sunday, the lonely hilltop that became Edoras, seat of the King of Rohan. Standing there with 360-degree views of the Southern Alps, you will understand why Peter Jackson chose it.
We continue through the Southern Alps to Aoraki/Mount Cook, the Misty Mountains made real, and on to Queenstown for three nights. From here: Milford Sound by private coach and cruise (Fiordland's jaw-dropping eighth wonder of the world), a full-day Lord of the Rings Safari through Glenorchy and Paradise Valley, Isengard, Lothlórien, Minas Tirith, the Argonath, the Ford of Bruinen, and more locations than I can list here. We close the journey in style with a farewell dinner aboard the TSS Earnslaw, a 100-year-old vintage steamship, cruising across Lake Wakatipu to Walter Peak for a gourmet BBQ dinner under the Southern stars.
13 days. Both islands. Every major location. A full-time local guide. Private coaches. Scenic ferry and rail. And a fellow fan leading the way who has been there, loves it as much as you do, and has planned every detail to honor the story.
This is the dream trip. It is the only one of its kind that I will ever lead like this.
Spaces are extremely limited by design. This will be a small, intimate group. When it fills, it fills.

Option 1: Book Through Flights & Fables (Recommended)
Let me coordinate your international flights as part of your overall travel package. Contact me directly to discuss airfare options once you've confirmed your spot.

TRAVEL PROTECTION / TRAVEL INSURANCE
Travel insurance is NOT included in the trip price but is STRONGLY recommended for a 13-day journey of this distance and value.
ANZCRO cancellation penalties apply from time of booking and can reach 100% of the land package value within 14 days of departure. Travel insurance is the only protection against losing your full investment due to illness, family emergency, or unforeseen events.
Recommended coverage should include: trip cancellation and interruption, emergency medical coverage, emergency evacuation, and baggage protection. Given the length and cost of this trip, Cancel for Any Reason (CFAR) coverage is worth considering.
Insurance must be purchased shortly after your individual deposit payment to ensure maximum coverage eligibility. Your travel insurance provider of choice can advise on timing requirements.
Rocky's note: I've traveled to 64 countries. The one consistent piece of advice I give every single client: on a trip this significant and this far from home, travel insurance is not optional. Please protect your investment.
