    Today, venture just 30 minutes outside Cartagena to the peaceful Afro-Caribbean fishing village of La Boquilla. Afterward, glide through the village’s mangrove-lined waterways by canoe, as a local guide shares insights into the ecosystem, the importance of mangroves, and the wildlife that thrives there. You can navigate hills and uneven ground, climb into various modes of transportation (tuk-tuk, cable car, zodiac, etc.), and could possibly anticipate changes in elevation. Walking four miles over the course of a day is very doable as is climbing 3 flights of stairs. You can handle altitudes between 6,000 and 9,000 feet. You can expect some longer days balanced with free time. This level is not a fit for travelers that require mobility assistance devices.
    • This is a Hosted Extension. Enjoy a mix of time on your own and some planned tour activities. A local expert is available during part of your stay to guide you during scheduled activities and provide recommendations. In addition, your accommodations, daily breakfast, and any transfers to connect with your main tour are included.
    • We reserve the right to cancel this extension if a minimum of 4 travelers is not met to operate.

    • Medellín is a mountainous city with steep streets, which can make walking challenging for some travelers. This itinerary includes two experiences that involve navigating hills on foot. During the Medellín neighborhood tour, expect several inclines to fully explore the community. While visiting Castillo San Felipe de Barajas, you will need to walk up slopes to access key areas.
    • If you require any special assistance while on tour, please make us aware at time of reservation so the necessary request form can be sent to your attention.
    • Cartagena enjoys a tropical climate year-round with high humidity and daily temperatures in the high 80s to low 90 degrees Fahrenheit (32 degrees Celsius).
    • The highest elevation on this tour will be 8,400 feet (2,560 meters) in Santa Elena.
    • Order of sightseeing is subject to change.
    • The community visited in Medellín is an authentic neighborhood that reflects the daily life of many local residents. It is a less affluent area, and visitors may notice modest housing conditions, stray dogs, and other aspects of urban life. These elements are part of the community’s reality and contribute to understanding its history and culture. Travelers are encouraged to approach the experience with respect and an open mind.
    • Accommodations in Cartagena are located inside the Walled City (UNESCO). As the majority of hotels are historic in the walled city, room sizes may vary and there may not be elevator access at your hotel.

    • Costa Rica’s tropical climate brings warm temperatures, high humidity, and frequent rainfall.
    • Rainy season typically runs from May through November, with frequent showers — often in the afternoons.
    • The roads in Costa Rica are notoriously poor and impacted by heavy rains each season making them bumpy and requiring lower driving speeds. You can expect winding and some unpaved roads along the way.
    • This tour features four days where you have full days of sightseeing requiring morning departures from your hotel returning late afternoon. Additionally, five of the touring days you will depart your hotel before 8:30 a.m.
    • In order to experience all that we have included on this tour, three of the tour days will require driving and/or a boat transfer with 4-5 hours of actual time in transit.
    • The days and order of sightseeing may change to best utilize your time on tour.
    • Museum visits and shopping may be affected by the observance of religious or local holidays.
    • We make every effort to immerse you in Costa Rica’s incredible nature and wildlife, but sightings cannot be guaranteed. Animals are wild and may behave unpredictably — keep a safe distance, stay alert, and follow your guide’s instructions.
    • **White water rafting is subject to the operator's safety restrictions.
    • Elevators and air conditioning are not available in most accommodations used on this tour.
    • During our stay in Tortuguero, you will be staying in an eco-lodge. This is an experiential stay that will expose you to amazing wildlife. The rooms are rustic and basic but comfortable. There is a ceiling fan but no air conditioning available. Tortuguero National Park lodges can only be accessed by motorboat.
    • Many accommodations can be spread out, and you should be prepared to walk on a variety of terrains to get to public spaces like resort lobbies and restaurants. You may need to access your room through outdoor pathways.
    • Hotel check-in on your day of arrival is 3:00 p.m. Rooms may not be available prior to that time.
    • Single accommodations are limited and are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Single rate subject to change based on availability.
    • Smaller coaches, which may not be lavatory equipped, may be used on this tour. In this case, frequent stops are made during travel periods.
    • *Due to luggage size and weight restrictions on the boats, please bring an overnight bag for the 2-night stay in Tortuguero National Park. Your main luggage stays in San Jose and joins you upon your return to the mainland.
