Birth of Creation 2027: Where Story, Sea, and Self Meet.

Jun 12 - 19, 2027

There is a small Ionian island where the light turns gold at dawn, the cicadas keep time, and the water is said to have carried Aphrodite herself into the world. This is Kythera and for the third year running, it's home to Birth of Creation, a Narrative Healing retreat that fuses mindful movement, deep writing practice, and a deeper connection to yourself and to community around you.

Unlike a one-off retreat, Birth of Creation begins before you ever board a plane. A new monthlong online community program leads up to the week in Kythera - a space to connect with fellow writers, get grounded in the Narrative Healing approach, and arrive on the island already knowing your cohort and already clear on what you're there to write. By the time you land, the work has already started.

Narrative Healing founder Lisa Weinert returns to guide the group’s writing practice, joined by yoga and breathwork teacher Brette Popper and award-winning editor, activist, and author Jamia Wilson. Together, they create a warm, spacious container in which a small circle of writers can listen inwardly, reconnect with their creative lives, and bring their voices more fully to the page. Past guests have described leaving not just with pages revised, but with a settled, sustained sense of self-love they carried home with them.

  • Why Kythera

Guests consistently describe the island itself as a co-facilitator. One past attendee wrote about swallows swooping over white-washed buildings lit pink and gold at sunrise, the constant hum of cicadas, and a self-love that stayed with her, steady and unwavering, long after the retreat ended. Another described the sensation of a full-body exhale on arrival, calling it "Aphrodite's breath," and spoke of a creativity that rises in her there unlike anywhere else. A guest and longtime women's leadership advocate reflected on Kythera's dual identity as a landscape of beaches, mountains, honey, and healing herbs, and also the mythic seat of a goddess who rose from the foam fully formed and fully powerful.

This isn't a retreat that happens in Greece. It's one that happens with it.

    What Guests Discover

    • A room of one's own and a story that's been waiting. Thanks to the pre-residency online program, writers arrive already past the "where do I even start" phase and with dedicated, protected writing time paired with movement (yoga, breathwork, tai chi), they leave with real traction on structure, plot, or the courage to say the hard thing.
    • Radical self-reconnection. More than one past guest has named the deepest gift not as pages written, but as a rediscovered ease in her own skin — the kind that doesn't waver once she's home.
    • Ritual and myth as creative fuel. Past sessions have used oracle decks, lyre music, and communal writing prompts to explore listening, lineage, and the many names love has worn across cultures from Aphrodite to Yemaya to Ishtar.
    • A community that remembers you and one you already know. Several guests return year after year, as do the local shopkeepers, herbalists, and restaurant owners on the island who've come to know them by name. And thanks to the monthlong online program beforehand, this year's cohort won't be strangers on day one.

  • About the Narrative Healing Method

    VAST365 Headers (2).png

Birth of Creation is grounded in Narrative Healing™, the embodied writing approach developed by author, book coach, mindfulness teacher, and social worker Lisa Weinert. It begins with a simple premise: our stories live not only in the mind, but in the body.

Through guided writing, mindfulness, movement, and compassionate attention, participants learn to listen inwardly and approach the page with greater freedom, curiosity, and care. Traditional elements of craft including voice, structure, and revision are woven together with practices that support memory, intuition, imagination, and connection.

The experience begins with a monthlong online program, allowing participants to become familiar with the Narrative Healing approach, connect with one another, and clarify what they hope to explore before arriving in Kythera. On the island, that foundation opens into a week of dedicated writing, restorative practice, meaningful community, and time to receive the beauty of the natural world.

Writers can expect the retreat to challenge a few common writing myths head-on: that writing should come from the mind alone, that it should always come easily, that it's a solitary act, and that you need perfect conditions before you're allowed to begin. Instead, the retreat starting with the online program and carrying through the week in Kythera is built around permission, embodiment, and community, and around protecting real, focused time to write: the same principles at the heart of Lisa's book, Narrative Healing: Awaken the Power of Your Story.
