Feel Like Yourself Again - an Arctic Lapland retreat for women who've faced cancer

Apr 12 - 17, 2027

No one tells you that after cancer, the thing you want most isn't to become someone new — it's to simply feel like yourself again.

You rang the bell and told you to come back in a a few months! No one told you what you should be doing in between visits!

After months, maybe years, of being strong for everyone else — your body, your family, your treatment team — this retreat is a place to stop chasing the woman you used to be, and start becoming whoever you're becoming next. Five nights in the silence of the Finnish Arctic, in a small circle of women who understand without explanation, with a program built entirely around what the research says actually help.

The pace is slow by design. You will glide through snowy forests on a husky safari, meet reindeer, walk through the wilderness on snowshoes, and stand beneath the northern lights. We do take into account any mobility issues and make reasonable modifications.

The special guest, Karita Aaltonen, is a 12-year glioblastoma survivor, and will guide the yoga and conversation circles all week.

You will stay in a boutique hotel with your own private room. Every detail, from meals to activities, is included. All you need to arrange is your flight and travel insurance.

Eight women. Five nights. One unforgettable experience.

April 12–17, 2027 | Finnish Lapland, Finland

  • Northern Lights

As darkness settles over the Ounasjoki River, stars begin to appear in the northern sky. With favorable conditions, the Northern Lights may complete the evening — a breathtaking natural display above the silence of Lapland.

On a clear evening, there's a chance — never a promise, but a real one — to stand quietly along the river and wait for the sky to move. The Northern Lights can't be scheduled or guaranteed, but that's part of what makes them feel like a gift rather than an item on an itinerary: something vast and unearned, appearing (or not) while you simply stand still and let yourself be small for a moment. Even without a sighting, there's something healing in the waiting itself — bundled in warm layers, in good company, with nowhere else you need to be.

  • Sauna

There is a warmth here that has nothing to do with weather. Between the hotel's own sauna and an Authentic Riverbank Sauna Experience on the banks of the Ounasjoki, warmth becomes a daily ritual rather than a luxury you have to justify. Let your shoulders drop. Let your nervous system — so often braced for the next appointment, the next scan — remember what it feels like to simply be warm, unhurried, and safe, with the option of a bracing dip in the cold beside women who won't ask you to explain why you need this.

  • Reindeer & Husky Safari

Some healing doesn't look like sitting still — it looks like a sleigh gliding over snow, or a team of huskies pulling you through a silence broken only by their breath. The reindeer and husky safaris ask very little of your body and give a great deal back: wonder, movement without strain, and the particular relief of being somewhere so wide open that your worries have nowhere left to crowd in. You don't have to be strong for this one. You just have to let yourself be carried for a while.

  • Snowshoe walking

A guided snowshoe walk through Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park moves at exactly the pace your body sets — equipment provided, no experience required, nowhere to rush to. Each step lands soft in fresh snow, the forest close and quiet around you, your only job to notice it. Research on forest immersion suggests time like this does more than calm the mind — it may support the body's own defenses for days afterward. This isn't a hike to conquer. It's a walk to remember what it feels like to move through the world without your body being the story.

  • Yoga and Meditation

Three mornings begin here, and there is no version of this you can get wrong. Karita's yin yoga and meditation sessions ask nothing more of your body than it already knows how to give — every posture is supported, every pace is yours, and rest is treated as the point, not a fallback. If fatigue has quietly redrawn the shape of your days, you'll find something rare in this room: permission. No performance, no proving anything — just the slow, steady work of easing a tired body and a watchful mind back into stillness together.

  • Meet Karita Altonen - a cancer survivor

In 2012, Karita Aaltonen was diagnosed with Grade IV glioblastoma and given only months to live. More than a decade later, she is a wellness coach, speaker, and author of four books on healing — including I Survived: A Nordic Woman's Guide to Healing from Cancer. She guides the retreat's full wellness program: three yin yoga sessions, two intimate conversation circles, and her signature workshop, From Impossible to Hope. Her message to the group is simple — you can't always choose what happens to your body, but you can always choose how you respond, and that choice, alongside your medical care, matters.

  • Cost

$3500 buys you an unforgettable all inclusive experience: from the airport pick-up, hotel, meals, and activities, you do not have to worry about anything!

This is truly a place and time for you to breathe, relax and connect, to learn how to implement small steps into your daily routine so you can say confidently that you are starting to feel like yourself again!
