This morning brings the defining moment of the journey: the total solar eclipse of 2 August 2027. The eclipse will begin at approximately 8:40am, as the Moon starts to move across the face of the Sun. At first the change will be gradual, with only a small dark curve visible, but as the morning progresses the light will become increasingly unusual, shadows may sharpen, and the landscape can take on a strange, silvery quality.
Maximum eclipse is expected at approximately 9:47am, when the Sun will be completely covered for around 4 minutes and 51 seconds. During this extraordinary window of totality, daylight will fade into an eerie twilight, the horizon may glow in every direction, and the Sun's outer atmosphere — the corona — should appear as a pale halo around the black disc of the Moon. This is the only brief phase when the fully eclipsed Sun can be viewed without eclipse glasses, and guidance will be provided on safe viewing throughout the morning. After totality, the eclipse will slowly pass, coming to an end at around 11:00am.
Lunch and dinner included.
