It’s hard not to fall in love with Sitka, thanks to its beautiful ocean setting and unique blend of Alaska Native, Russian, and American history. This is one of the best towns in the Inside Passage to explore on foot, with must-see spots like St. Michael’s Cathedral, Sitka National Historical Park, the Alaska Raptor Center, Castle Hill, and the Sheldon Jackson Museum.
Sitka was originally home to the Tlingit people for centuries before Russian settlers arrived in the late 1700s, drawn by the area’s natural resources and prime location for trade. The early years were marked by conflict, but over time, the Tlingit and Russians reached an agreement and the town grew into a thriving hub for shipbuilding, trade, and industry, once even nicknamed the “Paris of the Pacific.”
After Alaska was transferred to the United States in 1867, Sitka went through periods of change but remained an important community. Today, it’s known for its strong ties to fishing, tourism, and government, while still holding onto the rich history and culture that make it such a memorable stop.
