Even in one of the most isolated regions of the Arctic, there is still the captivating history of a pioneering past. Our expedition leaders, along with the captain and onboard pilot, will determine possible landings each day for all-out explorations. Wildlife abounds throughout the archipelago of Svalbard, such as puffins, reindeer, Arctic terns and foxes. An expert photographer will help you look out for the perfect photo opportunity of these animals, but especially for the elusive polar bear. As Zodiac cruises may bring you closer to glaciers, keep your eyes on the water for whale fins.
CAPTAIN’S CHOICE — Your Captain will expertly navigate ice floes, icebergs and changing sea and weather conditions to ensure you experience the most from your expedition. Each day is a new adventure filled with a spontaneous sense of exploration as your Captain works with our expedition team to determine possible shore landings and Zodiac safaris. All itinerary routes serve as examples and are subject to change based on current conditions, prioritizing the safety and optimal expedition experience for all guests.
A flexible itinerary allows us to take advantage of favorable ice and weather conditions to travel through the northern stretches of Svalbard to points visited by famous polar explorers such as Andrée, Amundsen and Nobile. Destinations might include the narrow waterways and striking mountains of Krossfjord and Raudfjord. The ship may visit the historic settings of Ny Alesund, Ny London or Amsterdamoya. And of course, we hope to see distinctly Arctic wildlife from walrus hauled out in noisy groups on remote shorelines, to reindeer grazing alpine slopes, and from ptarmigan in their camouflaged hiding places, to mighty polar bears striding the shores in search of their next meal.
Svalbard, a remote archipelago nestled between mainland Norway and the North Pole, is a land of stark beauty and untamed wilderness. Known for its dramatic landscapes, polar bears, and the ethereal Northern Lights, Svalbard offers a unique blend of adventure and tranquility. The rhythm of life here is dictated by the Arctic seasons, with locals embracing the extremes of endless summer days and the long, dark polar nights.
In July, Svalbard experiences the Midnight Sun, where the sun never sets, bathing the landscape in a perpetual golden glow. Temperatures are mild for the Arctic, ranging from 3°C to 7°C (37°F to 45°F), making it an ideal time for outdoor exploration without the harshness of winter.
