UNESCO Wachau Valley | Scenic Cruising No port stop today — just you, the river, and some of the most stunning scenery in Central Europe. Watch vineyard-draped hillsides, medieval castle ruins, and tiny villages drift past from the sun deck. The Wachau Valley is a UNESCO World Heritage Site for good reason!
Pro tip: This is a deck day! Grab a coffee, stake out a sun lounger, and stay outside. The scenery changes constantly and many of these landmarks appear with little warning.
What You'll See: Vienna to Linz on the Danube
This is one of the most celebrated stretches of river in all of Europe. The ship enters the UNESCO Wachau Valley shortly after leaving Vienna — think vineyard terraces, hilltop castle ruins, and storybook villages around every bend.
🏰 Schönbühel Castle
Rising straight out of the water on a rocky cliff, this 12th-century castle looks like something out of a fantasy novel — and you can only truly appreciate its beauty from the river. When it comes into view, it feels almost magical. It's often called the "Watchman of the Wachau."
🏛️ Melk Abbey
The showstopper of the entire valley. This golden baroque abbey dominates Melk's skyline and is even more spectacular from the river. It sits on a high promontory above the river, the abbey church consecrated in 1723.
🏚️ Aggstein Castle Ruins
Aggstein is the largest and best-preserved castle ruin site in the Wachau Valley, built in the 12th century on a rocky outcropping nearly 1,000 feet above the Danube. It's notorious for having been inhabited by "robber barons" who imprisoned rivals for ransom and extracted tolls from boats passing below.
💙 Dürnstein
Wachau's most iconic town, famous for its blue-and-white church tower and the castle ruins linked to Richard the Lionheart. The ruins of Kuenringerburg sit on the hilltop above town — this is where Richard the Lionhearted was held for ransom during the Crusades. The blue baroque tower is instantly recognizable from the water.
🍷 Spitz & the Vineyard Villages
Spitz is a sleepy wine town with terraced vineyards climbing the hillsides — a great place to appreciate the Grüner Veltliner and Riesling wines that have shaped life here for centuries. Just above Spitz, guests will also see the Hinterhaus Castle ruins looming over the town. Between the villages, nearly half the vineyard acreage is planted in terraces supported by omnipresent stone walls guarding the steep downslopes.
⛪ Göttweig Abbey
Perched on the hills above the valley, Göttweig Abbey is another dramatic landmark visible from the river as the ship moves through the valley toward Linz.
