Located 50 miles from Nassau, Great Stirrup Cay is a 250-acre island owned by Norwegian Cruise Line. A range of activities are on offer, including water sports, ping-pong, beach volleyball and a water slide. For lunch, the Jumbey Beach Grill offers barbecues on the beach. Afterwards, head to the Berried Treasure Bazaar to find a little something to bring back home.

I dug through NCL’s current Great Stirrup Cay pages, the new 2026 fact sheet, shore-excursion listings, accessibility information, and the latest updates on the island redevelopment. Great Stirrup Cay is a very different destination in 2026 than it was even a year or two ago. The new pier, huge pool complex, tram system, adults-only beach club, upgraded arrival area, and — beginning September 4, 2026 — the new Great Tides Waterpark have essentially turned it from a traditional cruise-line beach island into a full private-island resort.

Great Stirrup Cay is a 270-acre private island in the Berry Islands of The Bahamas owned by Norwegian Cruise Line. NCL has owned the island since 1977, and Norwegian says it was the first cruise line to develop a private tropical island exclusively for cruise guests. Today, the island combines white-sand beaches and turquoise Bahamian water with pools, restaurants, bars, water sports, excursions, private cabanas, luxury villas and a major waterpark.

One of the biggest improvements is how you arrive. Tender boats are no longer the normal way ashore. The new multi-ship pier opened as part of the island's recent redevelopment, allowing guests to walk directly off the cruise ship and onto Great Stirrup Cay. A complimentary tram system then moves guests around the island.

That is a pretty major upgrade. Anyone who visited GSC several years ago may remember waiting for tender numbers and riding ashore in tender boats. The new setup should make an island day much easier.

You absolutely do not have to purchase an excursion to enjoy Great Stirrup Cay.

NCL currently identifies the following as complimentary experiences: beach access, general access to Great Life Lagoon and its loungers, Splash Harbor for children, areas such as Hammock Bay, complimentary dining locations and island recreational activities such as beach volleyball and ping-pong.

And there is an important perk for passengers with NCL's beverage package:

If your cruise reservation includes the Free at Sea Unlimited Open Bar package, Norwegian says the package follows you ashore and can be used throughout Great Stirrup Cay, including bars at Great Life Lagoon and Great Tides Waterpark.

That's one of Great Stirrup Cay's biggest advantages over visiting a regular Bahamian port. You're essentially taking much of the ship's resort experience ashore with you.

This is one of the biggest changes to Great Stirrup Cay.

Great Life Lagoon is now open and contains a roughly 28,000-square-foot heated oceanfront pool — about 1.4 acres when the surrounding lagoon complex is considered. NCL describes it as roughly the size of a cruise ship.

The pool has a beach-style gradual entry, multiple swimming and lounging areas, aquatic features, complimentary lounge chairs and multiple swim-up bars. Families can settle near the shallow-entry areas while adults can swim farther into the lagoon or hang around the bars.

You don't need an additional admission ticket for the general pool area.

Private poolside cabanas are available for an additional charge. Current NCL listings include standard cabanas for up to eight guests with shaded seating, a small refrigerator with ice and water, bar service and convenient access to the pool. NCL was currently showing these from about $749 per cabana, although excursion prices can change considerably by sailing.

There are also couples cabanas for two, with shaded seating and prime poolside access. Current listings were showing them from approximately $329.

Beside Great Life Lagoon is Splash Harbor, a complimentary family splash area.

NCL describes it as approximately 3,000 square feet of water features designed primarily for younger children. It's only about 150 feet from Great Life Lagoon and has a nearby refreshment area serving kid-friendly drinks as well as beverages for adults.

This is worth distinguishing from Splash Cay inside Great Tides Waterpark. Splash Harbor is complimentary. Splash Cay is part of the paid waterpark.

This is the headline addition to Great Stirrup Cay.

Great Tides Waterpark officially opens September 4, 2026. Construction is complete and NCL says the attraction has been turned over to its operations team for final preparations.

The nearly six-acre complex includes 19 waterslides, consisting of 11 primary attractions plus eight children's slides, along with cliff jumps, pools, bars and a very unusual river attraction.

This is the main slide tower and includes several very different experiences.

Breakwater Blasters uses one- or two-person inner tubes and includes drops and uphill propulsion. Whitewater Dash is a body slide. Rapid Mat Racers provides competitive racing lanes. Tropic Storm and Tropic Spiral are tube attractions. NCL says Tidal Tower includes one of the tallest waterslides in the Caribbean.

Most Tidal Tower attractions require riders to be at least 42 inches tall.

This is probably the part teenagers and adventurous adults will talk about.

There are 10- and 15-foot cliff-jumping platforms, something NCL describes as the first cliff-jump attraction at a private-island waterpark.

You'll also find Fearless Falls, a racing body-slide attraction, and The Great Slide, a family body slide accommodating as many as four guests at once.

The minimum height for the main Cliffside Cove attractions is generally 48 inches.

This is not exactly a traditional lazy river.

NCL calls it the Wandering River, an attraction more than 800 feet long incorporating an immersive multimedia tunnel, attached pool and swim-up bar.

That bar is called the Floataway Bar.

So you can essentially float the river, hit the pool, grab a drink and get back into the action.

Hidden beneath Cliffside Cove is the Grotto Bar, designed so adults can hang out with a drink while still being close to the waterpark action.

Free at Sea beverage-package privileges apply at both the Grotto Bar and Floataway Bar.

Younger children have their own 9,000-square-foot Splash Cay area with eight slides and additional water features.

Some attractions have minimum heights of 36 or 40 inches, depending upon the slide.

Children ages 0–3 receive complimentary waterpark admission, although guests 17 and younger must enter with a ticketed adult age 18 or older.

Great Tides is not included with general Great Stirrup Cay admission.

At the time I checked NCL's current excursion inventory, regular all-day admission was showing from $89.99 per guest. Prices are based on availability and can change by sailing, so I would treat that as an example rather than a guaranteed price.

The day pass includes waterpark admission, lounge chairs and umbrellas subject to availability, complimentary dining choices with some premium food available for purchase, towels, lockers, tram transportation and complimentary life jackets on a first-come basis.

Guests can reserve through MyNCL before sailing. Norwegian strongly recommends booking ahead because passes are capacity controlled and may not remain available onboard.

For groups, there's a pretty interesting option.

Great Tides cabanas accommodate up to six people and include waterpark admission for all six. They also include a bottle of sparkling wine, fruit basket, chips and salsa, one bottle of water per person, towels and bar service.

Current NCL listings were showing these from roughly $1,099 for the cabana, again subject to sailing and availability.

For six people, that price is worth comparing against buying six individual park passes plus whatever value you place on having a private base camp.

For guests who think, I don't need all that — just give me sand and blue water, GSC still does that very well.

Norwegian's current fact sheet says there are approximately 1,500 feet of accessible white-sand beachfront, with loungers along the water.

Regular beach access is complimentary.

You can swim, lounge, nap, read, walk the shoreline or head out snorkeling. There are also hammocks around the island and several quieter places away from the main arrival zone.

NCL identifies three exclusive beach areas in addition to its public beaches, particularly around Silver Cove and the premium retreat areas.

Don't need a cabana but want guaranteed shade?

NCL rents clam shells for two, essentially covered beach loungers that provide shade and a little privacy. The rental includes two lounge chairs. Current pricing was around $49.50 for the day, subject to change.

For a couple planning an inexpensive beach day, this may be one of the best-value paid upgrades on the island.

These are open-air private beach cabanas rather than enclosed luxury villas.

They accommodate up to eight guests, have a private porch and elevated ocean views, and currently include bottled water and complimentary floating mats.

NCL's current listed starting price was approximately $699 per cabana.

They're particularly useful for families or small groups that want a central meeting place without paying Silver Cove prices.

Silver Cove is essentially the island's resort-within-a-resort.

It's a private section of Great Stirrup Cay featuring secluded beach areas, its own lagoon, upgraded dining, a spa and air-conditioned villas.

The real attraction here is the villas.

Ocean Villas accommodate up to six guests and sit along the private beach. They're air conditioned and include a television with complimentary on-demand movies, full private bathroom, retractable glass wall, beach access, umbrella and loungers plus admission to the upgraded Silver Cove buffet.

Current NCL pricing was starting around $1,049 per villa.

Lagoon Villas accommodate up to eight guests and include air conditioning, TV, full restroom, retractable glass wall and access to Silver Cove's private beach, upgraded buffet and spa area.

Prices were appearing around $1,149–$1,199, depending upon the particular listing and sailing.

These accommodate up to ten guests and add a king bedroom along with living and dining areas. Guests receive access to Silver Cove dining and beverage service.

NCL's broader Silver Cove villa inventory can accommodate groups of 6–16 guests, depending upon villa category.

Silver Cove also contains its own spa facility, giving villa guests the option of adding a massage or treatment to the day.

If someone wants Great Stirrup Cay to feel like a luxury resort rather than a beach excursion, Silver Cove is the way to do it.

This one could be especially appealing to couples traveling without children.

Vibe Shore Club is 18+, capacity controlled and deliberately quieter than the main beach and pool areas. Guests receive access to premium loungers, a private beachfront setting, a curated music atmosphere, premium cocktails and exclusive food options.

Current day-pass pricing was showing from $109.99 per adult.

There's also a Vibe Premium Cabana for up to four adults. It includes seating, ceiling fan, cooler with water and ice, outdoor shower, floating mats and four Vibe Shore Club passes. Current pricing was showing from about $749 per cabana.

If I were describing the difference simply:

Great Life Lagoon = resort pool party.
Regular beach = classic Bahamas day.
Vibe = adults-only upscale relaxation.
Silver Cove = luxury private retreat.
Great Tides = full-on waterpark day.

Great Stirrup Cay has long been known for snorkeling.

You can explore coral reefs and the island's underwater sculpture garden, which NCL specifically highlights as one of the signature attractions.

Snorkel equipment and organized snorkeling experiences are available for an additional charge.

For someone who doesn't want to spend a full day on an excursion, snorkeling is an easy activity to combine with several hours of beach time.

For something faster, there are guided WaveRunner tours through the surrounding Berry Islands.

NCL's current tour lasts about 1½ hours overall and includes approximately 45 minutes on the WaveRunner, visiting waters around Cistern Cay, Slaughter Harbor and the Great Stirrup Cay lighthouse area.

Current single-driver pricing was approximately $199.99, while the two-person driver/rider version was appearing around $229.99, subject to availability and sailing.

Stand-up paddleboards are available at Bertram's Cove.

The current SUP rental lasts about an hour and lets guests paddle around the cove while looking for marine life. Pricing was showing around $49.99.

Kayaking and additional guided water activities are also offered. NCL's fact sheet lists WaveRunners/jet skis, kayaks, paddleboards, snorkeling and giant floating mats among the island's paid water-sports offerings.

Great Stirrup Cay also has a surprisingly serious zipline complex.

The Island Zipline Adventure combines six ziplines with V-net bridges, chimney climbs and cargo-net obstacles. Platforms reach approximately 120 feet, and riders can reach speeds exceeding 50 mph while traveling above the beach and reef.

Current pricing was roughly $150 per person.

There's also the Seahawk Zipline, which starts more than 100 feet above the ground and sends guests across the water with views of beaches, coral reefs and neighboring islands.

Definitely not your standard "sit on a beach chair all day" private-island activity.

Yes — you can do the famous Bahamas swimming-pig experience from Great Stirrup Cay.

NCL offers excursions where guests visit a nearby island area and enter shallow water with swimming pigs. Some experiences also include encounters with stingrays, starfish, conchs and sand dollars.

These excursions are an additional charge and are among the more expensive activities, but they're also one of those uniquely Bahamian photo opportunities people tend to remember.

You don't have to pay for everything.

The island provides complimentary recreational activities including beach volleyball and ping-pong, so groups can easily organize informal games during the day.

One of Great Stirrup Cay's most photographed spots is its set of overwater swings.

They're positioned in the turquoise shallows, and NCL specifically calls them one of the island's signature photo locations.

Translation: expect a line when everyone simultaneously decides they need that Instagram picture.

There are multiple complimentary dining locations, so nobody needs to return to the ship for lunch.

This is one of the island's principal casual dining spots. Expect traditional cruise-private-island fare such as burgers and easy beach food.

This is NCL's island food truck serving quick Caribbean-inspired bites.

There is also a simple hot-dog option for a fast lunch or snack.

Silver Cove has its own upgraded buffet, available to qualifying Silver Cove guests.

Vibe also has exclusive food offerings for its guests rather than requiring them to leave the club.

The waterpark has both complimentary food and upgraded selections available for purchase, so guests don't have to leave the park to eat.

There are bars scattered across the island, meaning you don't have to keep walking back toward the main beach.

Bacardí Bar specializes in freshly muddled mojitos. Patrón Bar is a margarita stop. Bertram's Bar is positioned as a livelier social bar. Great Life Lagoon has swim-up bars, while Great Tides adds the Grotto and Floataway bars.

Again, guests with qualifying Free at Sea beverage packages can use them ashore.

The island includes Harborside Market, where passengers can purchase locally styled goods, handcrafted souvenirs and island keepsakes.

I wouldn't make shopping the centerpiece of a GSC day — this isn't Nassau — but there are places to pick up a souvenir without sacrificing much beach time.

The arrival experience has also been rebuilt.

Guests now enter through the Welcome Plaza, with shade and an elevated panoramic overlook. A bridge reaches approximately 12 meters above the ocean, creating an excellent viewpoint for photographs of the coastline and cruise ships.

It's worth stopping there briefly before rushing toward the beach.

The new complimentary tram system is a big deal because Great Stirrup Cay is much larger than passengers sometimes expect.

Trams connect the new pier with different parts of the island, making it easier to reach attractions such as Silver Cove and Great Tides without spending half the morning walking in Bahamian heat.

For guests with limited mobility, that should make the island substantially more manageable.

NCL says the island includes accessible walkways, and accessibility accommodations are available in several areas. Great Tides Waterpark has accessible pathways, and the Wandering River has a pool lift.

Guests with mobility or other accessibility needs should still contact NCL's Shoreside Access Desk ahead of sailing, particularly when booking waterpark attractions or excursions.

Some adventure attractions have significant physical requirements. The waterpark involves stairs, wet surfaces and extended walking, and individual slides have height and weight restrictions.

You don't need much.

Your ship keycard is essential because purchases, excursions and beverage-package privileges are tied to your onboard account. Bring swimwear, reef-conscious sunscreen, sunglasses, hat and beach shoes or sandals. NCL specifically recommends swimwear/beachwear, sunscreen, sunglasses and your room key for Great Tides.

Waterpark guests do not need to haul towels from the ship — towels are supplied inside Great Tides. Lockers are complimentary there as well.

For the general beach area, I'd still follow whatever towel instructions NCL gives onboard that morning.
