Shimizu
Details
Shimizu is a port with a lot going on, even if the skies don't cooperate for mountain views. In July, clouds frequently obscure the peak, so plan on exploring everything else this area has to offer.
Hakone is just about an hour away and makes for a rewarding day out. The Hakone Open Air Museum is one of Japan's best, with sculptures spread across a beautifully landscaped outdoor setting alongside a strong indoor collection. Lake Ashi offers a peaceful change of pace, with boat rides across calm water and views of the surrounding volcanic landscape. If you want to go higher, the Hakone Ropeway connects through the Owakudani volcanic zone, where the sulfurous steam vents are a sight on their own, with or without a clear summit behind them.
Closer to the port, Kunozan Toshogu Shrine is well worth the cable car ride up for its ornate architecture and sweeping views over Suruga Bay and the tea fields below. Shimizu's Satta Pass offers another scenic walk with coastline views, and the Nihondaira Plateau is a lovely spot for a picnic with green hills in every direction.
Mount Fuji may well be visible, and if it is, it's spectacular. But this port delivers on its own terms regardless.
