Passports are required for all international travel, including cruises where you embark or disembark outside of the United States.
Even if your cruise starts and ends in the U.S., I highly recommend that ALL travelers have a valid passport book(not just a passport card or birth certificate). Here's why:
If you need to fly home unexpectedly from a foreign port due to an emergency, you will not be allowed to board an international flight without a passport book. Passport cards and birth certificates are not valid for international air travel.
Cruises that begin or end in a different country—such as Canada, Europe, or the Caribbean—require a passport to board.
Passports can take 8–12 weeks to process, so apply early! Renew now if your passport is expiring soon, or if you’re running low on blank pages.
Your passport is your most important travel document—don’t leave home without it!
