Your ship arrives in one of the most stunning natural harbors in the Caribbean. Charlotte Amalie has been a port of trade for centuries, and that history is woven into everything here — the pastel Danish colonial buildings climbing the hillside, the brick-lined alleyways (called "gades") leading to covered shopping arcades, and the old warehouses that have been transformed into some of the best duty-free shopping in the world.
Your ship will be in port from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, which gives you plenty of time to explore. Downtown is just steps from the pier. Head to Main Street for jewelry, spirits, and luxury goods at prices you won't find stateside. For a dose of history, the 99 Steps — a staircase built from Danish ballast brick in the 1700s — takes you up to Blackbeard's Castle and sweeping views over the harbor.
If you'd rather spend the day at the beach, Magens Bay is a short taxi ride away and regularly ranks among the most beautiful beaches in the world. Water Island, St. Thomas's "fourth Virgin Island," is accessible by a quick ferry and offers a quieter, more local feel.
Don't miss a rum punch at a waterfront bar before heading back. You've earned it.
