Doi Suthep is about 15 kilometers from Chiang Mai and on it is Wat Prathat Doi Suthep, a holy temple easily reached from the city.
High in the hills above Chiang Mai is Doi Suthep temple, a spectacular shrine commissioned by King Kuena, ruler of Chiang Mai from 1367–88. According to legend, the temple’s site was chosen when an elephant carrying a sacred relic climbed the mountain and stopped at the mountaintop.
Construction began in 1386 and was completed within a few years. Visit the temple and enjoy views over Chiang Mai.
Lunch at a local restaurant.
In the afternoon, explore the handicraft traditions of the region. Take a tour to San Kamphaeng, the center of Thai handicraft production, where skills have been passed down through generations. From the silks and ceramics of San Kamphaeng Road to the paper parasols of Bo Sang Handicraft Village, see fine examples of northern Thai creativity and ingenuity.
Visit Bo Sang Umbrella Village, famous for the production of paper umbrellas hand-painted in infinitely detailed designs. These vibrant parasols are so popular that they are celebrated every January at the Bo Sang Umbrella Festival.
