Scenic Cruising Day
Where Silence Speaks Louder Than Words
Few places on earth can match the awe of Glacier Bay National Park. Today, your ship becomes a floating observatory as you sail deep into this UNESCO World Heritage Site — a pristine wilderness of towering glaciers, rugged peaks, and waters so still they mirror the world above.
Morning Arrival
Early this morning, National Park Rangers come aboard to guide your journey through the park. They’ll narrate the sights and share stories of the land, its wildlife, and the dramatic history of how this vast bay was carved by ice over centuries. Listen for their commentary over the ship’s PA system or join them on deck for a closer look through binoculars.
Grab a warm drink and head to your verandah or the Crow’s Nest Lounge — both offer unparalleled vantage points. As the ship glides through the bay, the temperature cools, and the landscape grows increasingly dramatic: turquoise icebergs drift by, waterfalls tumble down granite cliffs, and bald eagles soar overhead.
Afternoon – The Glaciers
The crown jewels of Glacier Bay are its massive tidewater glaciers, most notably Margerie Glacier and Grand Pacific Glacier. The captain will slowly rotate the ship, giving everyone a perfect view of the glacier face.
Take a deep breath and simply listen — you may hear the sharp crack and thunderous roar of “white thunder” as the glacier calves, sending huge chunks of ice crashing into the sea. It’s one of those moments that no photograph can truly capture — you just feel it.
Keep an eye out for wildlife, too: sea otters float on their backs in the icy water, harbor seals rest on small icebergs, and mountain goats sometimes dot the distant slopes.
Onboard Enrichment
Throughout the day, Holland America’s naturalists and park rangers host talks and presentations about the region’s glaciers, wildlife, and Indigenous cultures. The ship also features special Alaskan-inspired menus, from fresh seafood chowder served on deck to themed dishes in the Dining Room celebrating the flavors of the North.
Evening Reflections
As the ship turns southward, leaving Glacier Bay behind, the landscape slowly softens — a final farewell of snow-capped peaks fading into twilight. Many guests choose to gather on deck for one last look, cameras in hand but hearts full.
Tonight’s dinner carries an extra sense of wonder. Conversation turns to the day’s magic — the stillness, the sound of cracking ice, the reminder of how small we are in the face of nature’s grandeur.
Tomorrow, you’ll dock in Ketchikan — a colorful harbor town that perfectly captures Alaska’s lively spirit.
