Puerto Chiapas serves as the gateway to Mexico's southernmost region and the town of Tapachula. Originally named Tapacholatl, meaning "flooded land" in Nahuatl, it was founded in 1486 by the Aztec leader Tiltolotl. Officially recognized as a town in 1813, it became a hub for maritime commerce. The city modernized in the 1950s and is known for its warm climate and traditional architecture. Tapachula is the birthplace of the Ataulfo mango and boasts lush vegetation, including heliconias and orchids.
