Hubbard Glacier is one of Alaska’s most unforgettable sights. This massive river of ice stretches about seven miles across and seventy six miles long, rising as tall as a thirty story building above the water. It formed over centuries from snowfall on the slopes of Mount Logan, and unlike many glaciers around the world, Hubbard continues to grow and advance. At times it even pushes far enough to partially block Russell Fjord.
Your ship will make its way through Yakutat Bay and into the narrow Disenchantment Bay, where the glacier comes into full view. The currents and tides in this area create daily calving, sending huge pieces of ice crashing into the water. It is powerful, peaceful, and completely mesmerizing to watch.
You can take in the scenery from almost anywhere on the ship. An onboard naturalist will share insights about the glacier and point out wildlife that may appear in the bay, including whales, harbor seals, and otters. It is one of those rare Alaska moments that stays with you long after the trip ends.
