Today is all about Alaska’s legendary ice and wilderness as Star Princess glides through glacier-carved fjords and towering mountain peaks.

Relax on deck or at the rail as the ship eases into a world of blue ice and rugged cliffs. The captain will slow and pivot the ship to give both sides fantastic views of the glacier faces and surrounding peaks, so you’ll have multiple chances to soak it all in.

Listen for the deep crack and rumble of calving glaciers as house-sized chunks of ice break away and crash into the sea. Watch the colors shift from bright white to electric blue as the light changes and the ship gently turns.

Binoculars are very helpful, but even without them you’ll have awe-inspiring views from the open decks.

• Use multiple vantage points: Explore different decks and sides of the ship as it turns for a variety of angles.
• Bring a zoom lens if you have one: Great for capturing calving ice, wildlife on the shore, and details in the glacier face.
• Mind the contrast: Glaciers can appear very bright. Use a slightly lower exposure to keep the ice from looking washed out.
• Protect your gear: Keep a microfiber cloth handy for sea spray and drizzle.
• Be present: Take your must-have shots, then pause, lower your camera, and simply enjoy the moment.

Alaska’s weather can change quickly, especially near the ice. For maximum comfort, dress in layers:

• Moisture-wicking base layer (top and bottom)
• Warm mid-layer such as fleece or a light sweater
• Windproof, waterproof outer jacket with a hood
• Warm hat or headband and lightweight gloves
• Comfortable, closed-toe shoes with good grip

Even if the day starts out mild, it can feel much cooler on deck with wind and glacier-chilled air, so it’s better to have an extra layer than to wish you did.
