Today’s journey takes you into the heart of Morocco’s Middle Atlas region, where the landscapes shift dramatically from historic cities to alpine-style towns, cedar forests, and rugged mountain terrain.
Depart Fes and travel south into the scenic town of Ifrane, often called “Morocco’s Switzerland” for its European-inspired architecture, clean streets, and mountain setting. Continue through the Middle Atlas to the cedar forests of Azrou, where you may encounter wild Barbary macaques among ancient trees.
As the road climbs and winds through sweeping mountain scenery, take in ever-changing views of forested slopes, rocky plateaus, and small rural villages that reveal a quieter side of Morocco.
By late afternoon, arrive in Midelt, a peaceful town nestled between the Middle and High Atlas Mountains, where you’ll settle in for the night and prepare for the journey toward the Sahara.
