Do I need a passport? If you're traveling from the mainland United States, no. Puerto Rico is a U.S. territory, so it's a domestic trip and no passport is required (a valid government-issued photo ID will do for your flight).
What airport do I fly into? Most guests fly into San Juan (SJU), which is about a 1.5-hour drive south to Ponce. The smaller Ponce airport (PSE) has limited service but is worth checking for convenience.
Do I need a rental car? A rental car is the easiest way to get around Ponce and out to attractions outside the city. Rideshare (Uber) exists but can be spotty, so we don't recommend relying on it for tight timing (such as arriving to the ceremony).
What currency is used? The U.S. dollar; same as the mainland. No need to exchange money.
Should I bring cash? Yes, bring some cash, especially small bills for tips. Many street vendors, kiosks, and small local spots are cash-only, even though cards are widely accepted at restaurants and hotels.
Is the tap water safe to drink? Yes, the tap water is safe to drink.
Will my phone work? If you have a U.S. carrier, your phone works just like at home with no international roaming charges, since it's a domestic destination.
What about electrical outlets? Same as the mainland U.S. 120V and standard U.S. plugs, so no adapter needed.
What time zone is Ponce in? Atlantic Standard Time. Puerto Rico doesn't observe daylight saving, so in January it's the same as U.S. Eastern Time.
What's the weather like in early January? Warm and sunny! Daytime highs in the low-to-mid 80s°F, evenings around 70°F, and January is one of the driest months. Pack light, breathable clothing, sunscreen, and a light layer for breezy evenings. Comfortable shoes are a must for the cobblestone streets downtown.
