Meteora Monasteries
Meteora's impressive rocks rise from the plains of Thessaly a few kilometers northwest of the town of Kalabaka, making it one of Greece's most amazing places. Many centuries ago, one of Greece's most important monastic communities was formed on these massive rocks with the breathtaking landscape reaching heights of more than 600 meters. Meteora, which means "suspended in the air," aptly describes these remarkable Greek Orthodox monasteries. Meteora is one of the largest and most important complexes of Eastern Orthodox monasteries in Greece and is included on the UNESCO World Heritage. All of these monasteries are perched on high cliffs and accessible by staircases cut into the rock formations. They were created to serve monks and nuns following the teachings of the Greek Orthodox Church. Much of the architecture of these buildings is Athonite in origin. Of the six intact monasteries, the Holy Monastery of St. Stephen and Monastery Roussanou are inhabited by nuns. Meteora proves the awe for man’s achievements in an effort to express his religious drive, when these are only some of the many things a traveler experiences when visiting this phenomenal land!
