Guide to the Nuremberg Trials Museum & Key Historical Sites
To Start, We Highly Recommend A Guided Tour. For details, please inquire so we may share tour options with you.
Distances measured from Nürnberg Hauptbahnhof (Main Train Station); the river cruise port is essentially the same distance or slightly closer to the Old Town.
Distance: ~2.5 miles from the train station (10–15 minutes by taxi, 15–20 minutes by tram), ~2.3 miles from the river cruise port
Located in the actual courthouse building where the post-war Nuremberg Trials took place, this is one of the most significant World War II and justice-history museums in the world.
What You’ll See
Courtroom 600, where leading Nazi officials were tried in 1945–46
Detailed exhibits explaining the origins of the trials
Documentation, videos, interviews, trial footage, and multilingual audio guides
Displays covering the development of modern international law
Time Needed
Plan 1.5 to 2.5 hours depending on how deeply you explore the exhibits.
Tips
Courtroom 600 is still occasionally used for special events, so access may vary—mornings typically offer the best availability.
Arrive earlier in the day if you want quieter viewing and more available seating in the exhibit areas.
It pairs very well with a visit to the Documentation Center (see below) for a complete historical narrative.
2) Documentation Center & Nazi Party Rally Grounds
Distance: ~3 miles from the train station (10–15 minutes by taxi, 20 minutes by tram), ~3.5 miles from the river cruise port
The Documentation Center is located at the massive former Nazi Party Rally Grounds and provides essential context for the rise of National Socialism in Germany.
What You’ll See
Multimedia exhibits on the causes and consequences of the Nazi regime
Detailed background leading up to the trials
A large-scale model of the rally grounds
Walking paths around Zeppelin Field and the Congress Hall
Time Needed
2–3 hours, plus optional time for a self-guided walk on the rally grounds.
Tips
This site is large and partially outdoors—dress appropriately for weather.
It’s less crowded than the Trials Museum, which makes pacing more comfortable.
Many visitors find the outdoor portion especially meaningful in morning or late-afternoon light.
3) Palace of Justice (Exterior) & Commemorative Displays
Distance: Same as the Trials Museum (they are in the same complex)
Even if you do not enter the museum, the exterior grounds include displays showing how the courthouse was adapted for the trials, including photographs from 1945–46. It’s a good addition if your party has varying interest levels in the interior exhibits.
4) Nazi Party Rally Grounds Walking Route (Zeppelinfeld Area)
Distance: ~3.5 miles from the train station, ~4 miles from the river cruise port
The rally grounds cover a huge area. The two most historically significant outdoor sections are:
Zeppelin Field
The reviewing stand and parade grounds used for military displays.
Great Road (Große Straße)
A wide granite avenue originally used as a symbolic route connecting the rally grounds to the old Imperial Castle.
Time Needed
About 1–2 hours depending on walking pace.
Tips
Pathways are easy and mostly flat.
This is open-air and can feel bleak—in a way that adds to its historical impact.
Early morning or sunset visits offer powerful light for photography.
5) Way of Human Rights (Straße der Menschenrechte)
Distance: ~0.7 miles from the train station, ~0.5 miles from river cruise port
Located in the Old Town, this outdoor sculpture installation symbolically contrasts the city’s dark past with its modern commitment to human rights. It’s a thoughtful companion stop after the Trials Museum.
6) Albrecht Dürer House + Imperial Castle (Optional Pairing)
Distance to Castle: ~0.9 miles from the train station, ~0.7 miles from river cruise port Distance to Dürer House: ~0.8 miles from the train station
While not directly related to the Nuremberg Trials, many travelers combine these with their historical day because:
They provide cultural balance after the heavy WWII material
They are close to restaurants and easier walking for the remainder of the day
The views from the castle give a great visual orientation of the city
