EXPLORE PUNAKHA
Meals – Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Morning after breakfast embark on a scenic hike leading to the majestic Khamsum Yuelley Namgel Chorten (approx. 2-hour round trip nature walk). This remarkable structure was erected with the intention of dispelling negative energies and fostering peace, stability, and harmony in a world marked by constant change. The chorten stands as a commanding presence in the upper Punakha Valley, offering breathtaking panoramas that sweep over the Mo Chhu River and extend towards the towering peaks of Gasa and the surrounding landscape.
Picnic lunch by riverside, enjoying magnificent views all around.
Post lunch, visit Sangchhen Dorji Lhuendrup Lhakhang, a serene nunnery perched on a ridge overlooking the Punakha and Wangdue valleys. It is an important centre for Buddhist learning where nuns are trained in spiritual studies, meditation, and traditional arts. The site also offers sweeping views of the surrounding mountains and peaceful surroundings. Meeting the nuns at Sangchen Dorji Lhuendrup Lhakhang is a quietly enriching experience, where warmth and humility shape every interaction.
Later explore Rinchengang village. Mesmerising Rinchengang village is located on hill opposite Wangduephodrang Dzong, above the West-East national highway. The village’s old traditional mud-houses are in clustered form with ancient look which is quite unique in comparison to other Bhutanese villages. The entire village is close knit community and according to legends its early settlers were hired in early 17th century by saint Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal as construction labourers from Cooch Bihar in India, for the construction of Wangdue Dzong.
They were exceptionally skilled in stone masonry and contributed heavily to the construction of Dzong. In recognition of their contribution, they were offered permanent settlement at this village. Rinchengang is considered one of the oldest villages in Bhutan and still retains its age-old cultures and traditions
