Travel Insurance saved BC Resident Ian
A bike accident is not so selfie-worthy, but Manulife Travel Insurance made it a little easier to handle for Ian. Before his “quasi-retirement,” the B.C. native enjoyed Manulife Travel Insurance through his employee health benefits.
Happy with his Manulife coverage, he now has Manulife’s FollowMe™ Health Insurance with the Travel Add-On, which gives him coverage for 30 days per trip. For a trip to California with his wife, Colleen, he knew he’d be away for more than 30 days, so he purchased extra days to help ensure he was covered for the whole trip. And it’s lucky he did.
Ian was on his own, enjoying a bike ride in Oceanside, between Los Angeles and San Diego, when, “As near as I can tell, the front wheel got caught in a groove in the road and basically the front wheel just kind of went sideways, so the bike stopped almost instantly and I didn’t.” He flew over the handlebars and rolled down the street. Fortunately, he was wearing a helmet, but he still wound up with a concussion, three broken ribs, a collapsed lung, and significant bruises and lacerations.
A bystander called 911 and an ambulance arrived to take him to a nearby hospital. Unsurprisingly, he says he was “pretty stunned.” But he was alert enough to give the hospital Colleen’s phone number and she immediately called Manulife.
The claims process was “very smooth,” she said. “They told me exactly what needed to be done.” The Manulife representative helped her with any questions she had about the forms she had to complete. And for this claim, she “was told in that initial conversation not to pay anything, that Manulife would take care of everything. And we had no problem that way. We were not asked for any money.”
Ian added, “We thought it was great that one headache that we might have had, wasn’t a headache – which was the whole claims process and dealing with the hospital and American medical system.”
The couple even received a few surprise bills from the hospital after they got home. They contacted their Manulife representative, who would always ask them to send it in so Manulife could take care of it.
Colleen summed up their claims experience by declaring, “I have no problems with the Manulife people – they were amazing!”
