Japan, Beyond the Temples

A Japan itinerary built for flow, flavor, and room to explore.

Step into Japan with intention. This isn’t a race between temples or a checklist disguised as an itinerary. It’s a carefully composed journey where ancient rituals, modern neighborhoods, extraordinary food, and exceptional whisky are allowed to unfold at their own pace. One day you’re wandering through a centuries-old shrine as the city hums quietly around you, the next you’re seated at a counter where dinner becomes theater and time politely excuses itself. Mornings are unhurried, afternoons are immersive, and evenings are reserved for experiences that reward sitting still…whether that’s a rare pour in a softly lit whisky bar or a meal that lingers well past the last course. From Tokyo’s layered neighborhoods to Kyoto’s calm elegance and Osaka’s unapologetic love affair with food, this is Japan experienced with flow, confidence, and just enough indulgence to feel like you did it right.

  • What This Trip Is About

    • Uncover Tokyo’s temples, serene gardens, and lively temple streets with a private guide, then savor the city’s remarkable food scene through hands-on sushi-making and irresistible street treats.
    • Discover Japanese whisky through curated tastings at refined, reservation-only bars, where expert bartenders guide you through rare and thoughtfully chosen pours.
    • Explore Kyoto’s bamboo groves, iconic temples, and lantern-lit geisha district with local insight and unhurried pacing.
    • Wander among the famously friendly (and sacred) deer of Nara, visiting ancient temples and parklands that reflect Japan’s earliest capital.
    • Sample Osaka’s famed street eats and soak in the city’s neon-lit energy, where food and nightlife are inseparable.
    • Relax as bullet trains whisk you smoothly between cities, turning long distances into effortless transitions.
  • This Trip Is For You If…

    • Japan has been on your list, but planning it feels overwhelming
    • You care about how days flow, not just what makes the list
    • You want temples, food, and whisky without turning the trip into a sprint
    • You value thoughtful planning and do not want to troubleshoot logistics on the fly
  • How This Trip Is Designed

I designed this trip to make Japan feel approachable, well-paced, and genuinely enjoyable once you’re on the ground.

Each city has a specific role in the itinerary, and each day is shaped to flow naturally. Transportation, reservations, and timing are handled in advance so you’re not constantly recalculating what comes next or worrying about what you might be missing.

I also believe some of the best moments of travel happen when you’re not rushing between plans. This itinerary is intentionally not over-scheduled, leaving space to wander, linger in a neighborhood, follow your curiosity, or sit down longer than planned when a place earns it.

Temples are scheduled where they enhance the day rather than interrupt it. Food experiences are given the time they deserve, without stacking too much around them. Japanese whisky tastings are planned as seated, reservation-based experiences at carefully chosen bars, where quality and guidance matter more than volume.

Private touring remains flexible and can be adjusted based on your interests, energy level, and travel style, ensuring the trip works for how you actually like to explore.

  • A Few Things Worth Knowing

Distilleries in Japan offer limited admission and are often in remote locations.

For those distilleries that work on a lottery basis, I'll work with you to try and secure tickets. In the event we cannot gain admission, we will discuss alternate approaches to experience Japanese whisky. These can include additional whisky bar tours or visits to distillery tasting rooms.

In many cases, a well-chosen whisky bar delivers a better experience, and will provide you with access to sample limited-availability whiskies.
