Day 1 · March 4 — Arrival in Colombo You land at Bandaranaike International Airport and are met by your National Guide, who will be with you for the entire journey. A 40-minute transfer brings you to the Courtyard by Marriott Colombo, where you'll settle in for the night. Overnight: Courtyard by Marriott Colombo | Bed & Breakfast

Day 2 · March 5 — Dambulla, Kandalama & Kala Wewa After breakfast, we head north on a scenic 3.5-hour drive, stopping en route at the Dambulla Cave Temple — a UNESCO World Heritage Site with frescoes over 2,000 years old and a colossal recumbent Buddha carved from living rock. Later in the afternoon, we continue to Kala Wewa for a kayaking excursion on this vast ancient reservoir. Keep your eyes open: elephants have been known to cool off along the banks. Overnight: Amba Yaalu, Kandalama | Half Board

Day 3 · March 6 — Sigiriya, Alms Giving & Mihintale We're up early — around 6:00 AM — to climb Sigiriya Rock Fortress before the heat sets in. The views from the top of this 200-meter citadel are worth every one of the 1,200 steps. Back at the hotel for breakfast, then we drive to a rural monastery for an Alms Giving Ceremony with the monks. In the afternoon, we head to Mihintale to meet a local monk who introduces us to the practice of meditation at the ancient Kaludiya Pokuna pond complex. Overnight: Amba Yaalu, Kandalama | Half Board

Day 4 · March 7 — Kandy via Village Crafts & Spice Garden We check out after breakfast and wind our way toward Kandy, stopping along the way to meet local artisans who have kept traditional lacquerware painting and natural thatching techniques alive for generations. In Matale, a visit to a private spice garden reveals the cloves, cinnamon, cardamom, and pepper that once made Sri Lanka the most coveted island in the world. We arrive in Kandy in time to settle in before an evening stroll through the city's historic heart with a local host. Overnight: Thilanka Kandy | Half Board

Day 5 · March 8 — A Full Day in Kandy This is one of my favorite days on the entire trip. We start with a visit to Chandani, a batik artist and mother who works from her home tucked inside a working tea plantation — her story is extraordinary and the work she creates is stunning. From there, we head to Chami's home in the hills for a hands-on Sri Lankan cooking class, starting at the local market and ending with a meal you made yourself. After lunch, Master Ruwan brings it home with a traditional Kandyan dance and drumming experience — yes, you'll be invited to try. Overnight: Thilanka Kandy | Half Board

Day 6 · March 9 — Tea Country & the Train to Ella We say goodbye to Kandy and drive up into the misty hills of Nuwara Eliya, Sri Lanka's "Little England," for a visit to a working tea factory. You'll learn how Ceylon tea goes from leaf to cup, and have the chance to properly taste the different varieties. Then — the highlight of many a Sri Lanka trip — we board the local train at Ambewela Railway Station (departing 3:00 PM, arriving Ella 4:55 PM) for one of the most scenic rail journeys in the world. Rolling tea plantations, tumbling waterfalls, and cool hill air all the way. Overnight: Pinnacle Ella | Bed & Breakfast

Day 7 · March 10 — Udawalawe & Ahangama An early start to reach the Elephant Transit Home in Udawalawe in time for the 10:30 AM feeding. This isn't a tourist elephant show — it's a serious conservation center that rescues and rehabilitates orphaned calves before releasing them back into the wild. Afterwards, we stop at the Craft Tunnel for a hands-on pottery session with Master Potter Ajith Perera. Then it's onward to the southern coast, where Mosvold Villa and the Indian Ocean are waiting. Overnight: Mosvold Villa, Ahangama | Bed & Breakfast

Days 8 & 9 · March 11–12 — Ahangama at Leisure Two days to slow down and breathe. The beach is yours. We'll visit a Cinnamon Plantation to learn about Ceylon cinnamon — Sri Lanka produces over 70% of the world's supply — and spend time with the iconic Stilt Fishermen of the Southern Coast, the traditional Ritipanna fishermen who work from narrow poles anchored to the seabed. If the catch is good, don't be surprised if one of them bargains to sell you the fish you just watched him pull in. Overnight: Mosvold Villa, Ahangama | Bed & Breakfast

Day 10 · March 13 — Departure Safe travels home, with a lot of good stories to tell.
