En route to Kandalama, stop to visit the iconic Dambulla Cave Temple — a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A vast isolated rock mass where King Valagamba took refuge in the 1st century BC, later turning the caves into a rock temple. Some of its frescoes are over 2,000 years old, and the ceiling frescoes depict scenes from Buddha's life and Sinhalese history.
