Journey to Chiran, often referred to as 'Little Kyoto' for its well-preserved Samurai residences. These homes, along with their exquisite gardens, date back around 250 years and reflect the Edo period through their moss-covered stone walls, hedges, and black tile roofs. Some residences remain occupied by descendants of the Samurai, offering an evocative glimpse into historical Japan from the exterior.
Visit the Chiran Heiwa Kinenkan (Chiran Peace Museum), which delves into the history of Japan's kamikaze pilots who trained in the area before their suicide missions against Allied naval forces. The museum features photographs, final letters of the pilots—many of whom were teenagers—and underscores a poignant plea for world peace. While the portrayal of these pilots as national heroes may contrast with other cultural perspectives, the museum provides a significant reflection on history and the enduring hope for peace.
