Today we visit Trier, Germany’s oldest city and a place where layers of history are visible at every turn.
Founded by the Romans more than two thousand years ago, Trier is filled with remarkable landmarks that reflect its rich past. During our visit, we’ll explore some of the city’s most notable sites, including the impressive Porta Nigra, the best-preserved Roman city gate north of the Alps. We’ll also see the Imperial Baths, historic squares, and the birthplace of Karl Marx, all while strolling through a city that blends Roman heritage with the charm of a lively European town.
Alternatively, you may choose to cross the border into the neighboring country of Luxembourg. Here you’ll visit the Luxembourg American War Cemetery and Memorial, a moving and beautifully maintained site where more than 5,000 American soldiers who lost their lives during World War II are buried. Among them is General George S. Patton, whose grave rests here among his troops.
This evening we’ll gather for a Captain’s Farewell Reception and Dinner, a special celebration marking the final evening of our river cruise journey together.
