Arrive at the comfortable Kirwan Hut, built in 2023, and settle in for the night. The trip ends the next morning with breakfast and coffee while the sun comes up, enjoyed from this remote valley setting before your flight out.
The canyon in Icefall Brook is a one-of-a-kind geological feature. It is like a huge pipe going down 600m into the surrounding limestone. The high peaks that surround it have massive glaciers going right to the rim of the canyon. There are dozens of waterfalls spilling over the edge of the canyon. It is impressive in sunshine but even more spectacular in bad weather when every small stream is running.
In the summer the hut is normally used as the last stop on a 3 night hut to hut tour between the Rostrum, Icefall Lodge and the Kirwan. You can hike around the base of the waterfalls on the relatively flat valley bottom. You will hear the thunder and feel the mist of the falls tumbling from above. Nearby there are caves to explore.
The cabin sleeps 10 people in separate beds in one room upstairs. It has a full kitchen setup with a four-burner propane oven. There is an indoor pee toilet and an outhouse. There is a propane heater for drying gear and heating the cabin. There is a comfortable couch, benches and dinning room table downstairs.
