Step into more than 280 years of American history as you explore Middleton Place, home to America's oldest landscaped gardens. As you wander beneath majestic live oaks draped in Spanish moss, you'll discover breathtaking terraces, colorful camellias and azaleas (many still blooming in mid-April), reflecting pools, and sweeping views of the Ashley River. Every pathway seems to invite you to slow down and soak in the beauty of the Lowcountry.
Your visit includes the beautifully preserved House Museum, where original furnishings, artwork, and family treasures tell the story of the Middleton family, including Arthur Middleton, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. Throughout the grounds, you'll also experience the Stable yards, where heritage livestock and skilled artisans demonstrate the crafts and daily life of an 18th-century plantation.
One of the most meaningful experiences is the Beyond the Fields guided program, which shares the stories of the enslaved men, women, and children whose labor built and sustained Middleton Place. Along with guided garden walks and heritage breed presentations, these programs provide a deeper understanding of both the beauty and the complex history of this remarkable National Historic Landmark. Daily guided tours are included with admission, with schedules available at the Visitor Center upon arrival.
