Set where the fjords meet the sea, Ålesund is often called one of Norway’s most beautiful towns and it’s easy to see why. Known as the commercial heart of the Møre og Romsdal district, this coastal gem is celebrated for its graceful Art Nouveau (Jugendstil) architecture and postcard-perfect harbor views.
After a devastating fire in 1904 destroyed nearly 800 buildings and left 10,000 residents homeless, Ålesund was lovingly rebuilt with help from young architects inspired by both German Jugendstil and Viking motifs. The result is a city like no other, a whimsical blend of turrets, spires, and gables adorned with dragonheads and curving designs.
Wander the narrow streets lined with pastel-colored façades, visit the Jugendstilsenteret Museum to learn more about this distinctive architectural style, or climb to Mount Aksla for sweeping views of the surrounding islands and fjords.
As one of the few remaining Art Nouveau towns in the world, Ålesund received the Houens National Memorial Prize for the preservation of its unique character, a fitting tribute to a city that rose from the ashes to become a masterpiece of beauty and resilience.
