Gamlehaugen has been His Majesty the King's official residence in Bergen since 1925. In recent years, we have carried out major interior and exterior restoration work on this magnificent property.Gamlehaugen is His Majesty the King's official residence in Western Norway. The residence was built by businessman, politician and former Prime Minister Christian Michelsen (1857-1925), who lived there until his death.
Michelsen was the Norwegian prime minister who succeeded in peacefully dissolving the union between Norway and Sweden in 1905. But he was also a culturally interested and versatile businessman, who invested in businesses from ships to hotels and mines.
When he died, the property was purchased as a gift from the people, and has since become national property with a publicly accessible park, royal residence and museum.
