Every great voyage deserves a proper beginning. And there is no better city in the world to start one than New York.
You'll arrive today on your own schedule, with all of Friday and a leisurely Saturday morning ahead of you before boarding begins. The ship doesn't depart until Saturday at 5:00 PM, which means you have nearly two full days in one of the most electric cities on the planet before you ever step foot on Valiant Lady. This is not a layover. This is part of the trip.
Plan to arrive Friday. Settle in. Let New York do what New York does.
From JFK Airport ... approximately 45 to 60 minutes by car or rideshare to Midtown. Budget $55 to $85 via Uber or Lyft. The AirTrain to the subway is a budget-friendly option if you're traveling light.
From LaGuardia Airport ... approximately 30 to 45 minutes by car or rideshare. Budget $40 to $65.
From Newark Liberty Airport ... approximately 25 to 40 minutes by car or rideshare. Budget $45 to $70. The NJ Transit train to Penn Station is a convenient and affordable alternative.
RockStar Suite guests: your private airport transfer is included. Your RockStar Agent will coordinate details prior to sailing.
The Manhattan Cruise Terminal is located on the west side of Midtown between 46th and 54th Streets on the Hudson River. You want to be close, comfortable, and unhurried for this one.
Hotels I Love Near the Terminal
The Civilian Hotel ... steps from the terminal, stylish without being pretentious, excellent rooftop bar with Hudson River views. A personal favorite for pre-cruise stays in this area.
The Ink48 Hotel ... literally a five minute walk to the terminal, right on the river, modern and comfortable with a rooftop that is stunning in September.
The Knickerbocker ... iconic Times Square location, beautifully restored, great restaurant and bar on site. A quintessential New York experience.
The Arlo Midtown ... well priced, well designed, rooftop views and a great social vibe if you want to ease into vacation mode before the voyage begins.
I can arrange your pre-cruise hotel as part of your overall package. Just say the word.
With Friday afternoon and all of Saturday morning ahead of you, there is plenty of time to experience the city without feeling rushed. Here are a few ways to make the most of it.
Friday Afternoon and Evening
Check in, freshen up, and get outside. September in New York is genuinely one of the best kept secrets in travel. The summer crowds have thinned, the weather is warm and golden, and the city has a particular energy this time of year that is hard to describe and impossible to forget.
Walk the High Line for some of the best views of the Hudson River you can get on foot and let it lead you into Chelsea Market for dinner. Or head straight to Hell's Kitchen, right near the terminal, for some of the best casual dining in the city. Cap the night with a rooftop drink and a view of the skyline before it gets too late. You have a big trip ahead.
Saturday Morning
Sleep in a little. You've earned it and you have time. Grab a proper New York breakfast or brunch near your hotel. If Central Park is calling, answer it. September light through those trees is something you'll remember long after the trip ends. The Upper West Side, the West Village, the High Line again if you missed it Friday... all easy, all beautiful this time of year.
If you want the iconic New York moments: the 9/11 Memorial is worth the visit. The Staten Island Ferry is free and gives you a stunning view of the Statue of Liberty. The MoMA or the Whitney are both excellent if you want an hour of world-class art before getting on a ship full of world-class dining and entertainment.
Keep it easy. Keep it enjoyable. The ship is waiting.
Let me take that off your plate entirely. Pre-cruise hotel bookings, airport transfers, dinner reservations, show tickets, and day-of logistics are all things I can arrange as part of your overall trip experience. That is what I am here for.
Reach out before you book and we will build the full journey together from door to door.
