Step ashore at Kavala — the ancient city of Neapolis — the very first European ground on which the Apostle Paul set foot, answering the call of his Macedonian vision. This full-day tour follows one of the most significant routes in Christian history, from the port where Paul’s journey to Europe began, to the Roman colony of Philippi where the first European Christian community was born.
Your tour begins in Kavala, where you will visit the Archaeological Museum and walk through the old harbour area, the ancient Neapolis through which Paul passed on his arrival from Samothrace. From there, you travel to ancient Philippi, a remarkably well-preserved archaeological site and a place of extraordinary biblical significance. Here Paul preached, performed miracles, and was imprisoned — events recorded in the Acts of the Apostles and in his Epistle to the Philippians. You will visit the ancient theatre, the Roman Forum, the Early Christian Basilicas (Basilica A and Basilica B), and the Prison of Paul, where tradition holds that Paul and Silas were held and miraculously freed. The tour concludes at the River Gangites, the peaceful riverside site where Paul met Lydia, a dealer in purple cloth, who became the first European convert to Christianity and was baptised in these very waters — a deeply moving conclusion to a remarkable day.
