Today's the day we explore spectacular Lake Bled! Our hike along less trafficked trails surrounding the lake offers incredible views of the Kamnik-Savinja Alps, which make up the border between Slovenia and Austria. Our hike brings us to Radovljica, home to one of Slovenia's best-preserved medieval town centers, dating back to 1500. Amble through the cobbled streets and enjoy lunch on your own at one of the town's restaurants.
We end in the iconic lakeside town of Bled, which originally gained popularity as a health resort for Austrian aristocracy. Here we take time to stop at a family-owned beekeeping farm. Along with tasting the honey, learn about beehives, traditional and modern bee panels and the art of extracting honey.
Then we head to picturesque Vila Planinka, our exquisite retreat for the next two nights. From the comfort of your chic room, admire breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains, which serve as a playground and training ground for some of the world's top athletes. Alpinism and skiing are significant parts of Slovenia's cultural identity; one of the hotel's neighbors, for instance, led the British Royal Family up the Matterhorn. Additionally, Slovenian ski instructor Davo Karnicar was the first person to ski from Mount Everest's summit to its base camp.
We travel to a local country eatery this evening for a special dinner highlighting traditional—and fresh!— Slovenian cuisine.
