This one's different: Icy Strait Point is owned and run by the Huna Tlingit, built around a restored 1930s salmon cannery near the village of Hoonah. No cruise-town crush of jewelry shops — just old-growth rainforest, one of the densest humpback whale populations in Alaska just offshore, and Native-led culture that's actually theirs.
The headline act is the ZipRider — the world's longest zipline. You ride a gondola to the top of Hoonah Mountain, get strapped in six-across, and drop 1,300 feet down 5,330 feet of cable at up to 60 mph, straight over the rainforest toward the water. It's over in about 90 seconds. You'll talk about it for years.
Not a thrill-seeker? Whale-watching here is among the best in the state, plus bear viewing, guided hikes, and the cannery museum and shops right at the dock.
