Your cruise ends where a lot of great trips begin. The ship pulls into Canada Place, the sail-shaped terminal right in the heart of downtown Vancouver — walking distance to the waterfront, the mountains at your back and the sea at your feet. After a week of glaciers and small Alaskan towns, Vancouver lands like a grand finale: cosmopolitan, green, ringed by peaks, and one of the best eating cities anywhere. Flying home the same day would be a shame. Build in a few nights.

• Stanley Park — 1,000 acres of rainforest and shoreline a short stroll from the terminal. Rent a bike and ride the seawall, or walk out to the Indigenous story poles at Brockton Point.
• Granville Island — hop the tiny False Creek ferry to the public market for local cheese, seafood, and pastries, plus artisan studios and galleries.
• Gastown & Chinatown — cobblestone streets, the famous steam clock, and some of the city's best restaurants and bars.
• Capilano Suspension Bridge & Grouse Mountain — cross a swaying bridge 230 feet above a rainforest canyon, then ride to the top of the North Shore mountains for the view back over the city.
• Museum of Anthropology at UBC — a world-class collection of First Nations art and totem poles; a fitting close to a trip through Native Alaska.

If you're going to be this far already, a couple of add-ons are worth the extra days:

• The Rocky Mountaineer to Banff & Lake Louise — board a glass-domed luxury train and roll east into the Canadian Rockies. It's the natural sequel to your Alaska rail days, and the scenery earns every mile.
• Victoria & Butchart Gardens — ferry or floatplane over to Vancouver Island for the harbor town of Victoria and the spectacular Butchart Gardens.
• Whistler — drive the Sea-to-Sky Highway up to the resort village and ride the Peak 2 Peak gondola between two mountaintops.
