Europe’s Entry/Exit System (EES)

Europe has introduced a new digital border system called the Entry/Exit System (EES). This system replaces traditional passport stamps with electronic entry and exit records, along with a quick biometric check.
Who It Applies To:
- Travelers from non-EU countries visiting the Schengen Area for short stays (up to 90 days within any 180-day period)
- Visa-exempt travelers (U.S., Canada, UK, Mexico, etc.) and travelers with a short-stay Schengen visa
Who It Does Not Apply To:
- EU/EEA/Swiss citizens
- Long-term residence permit holders
- Travel to Ireland or Cyprus (they are not part of Schengen)
Children under 12 are exempt from fingerprint collection.
What to Expect at the Border
On your first entry into the Schengen Area after EES implementation, you may:
- Scan your passport at a kiosk or with border control
- Have a facial photo taken
- Provide fingerprints (ages 12+)
- No passport stamps — your entry is recorded digitally
Future entries with the same passport should be quicker, as your information will already be stored.

Travel Tip
