A Little History
Antigua was first settled by Arawak people around 2400 BC, making it one of the longest continuously inhabited islands in the Caribbean. Colonized by the English in 1632, it became a powerful sugar island, and its most enduring legacy is Nelson's Dockyard at English Harbour, the only continuously working Georgian dockyard in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2016. A young Horatio Nelson was stationed here from 1784 to 1787 as captain of HMS Boreas. He reportedly loathed his posting, calling Antigua "a vile place." History has a sense of humor.
