A Little History
Saint Kitts holds a remarkable distinction: it was the first permanent English settlement in the Caribbean, established in 1623. From here, English colonization spread to Nevis, Antigua, Barbados, and beyond, earning it the nickname "the Mother Colony." The island changed hands between England and France multiple times over the following centuries, and both sides built elaborate military defenses. The greatest of these, Brimstone Hill Fortress, took over a century to complete and became known as the "Gibraltar of the West Indies." In 1782, 8,000 French troops laid siege to it in one of the largest military engagements in Caribbean history. It held for a month before surrendering. Today it's a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Fun Facts

• Alexander Hamilton, whose face appears on the US $10 bill, was born in neighboring Nevis, but Basseterre was the commercial hub of his childhood. His mother ran a small store here.
• Saint Kitts' narrow-gauge sugar railway ran continuously for 350 years until the last sugar mill closed in 2005. It now operates as the St. Kitts Scenic Railway, one of the most unique excursions in the entire Caribbean.
• The vervet (green) monkey population on the island outnumbers the human population. There are roughly 40,000 monkeys compared to 35,000 people.
• Mount Liamuiga (3,792 ft) has a crater nearly one mile wide, with a lake inside that still steams gently today.

• Romney Manor and Caribelle Batik: A beautifully restored 17th-century plantation estate with six acres of tropical gardens, including a 350-year-old saman tree. Watch artisans create hand-batik textiles on-site.
• Independence Square, Basseterre: The town's historic heart, a lovely octagonal park surrounded by Georgian architecture and the striking Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. Also, sobering history: this square was once a slave market.
• Mount Liamuiga Crater Hike: A challenging but rewarding guided hike (4 to 5 hours) through rainforest to a steaming volcanic crater, with views across the Leeward Islands.

• Cockleshell Beach: On the Southeast Peninsula, with stunning views across the channel to Nevis and calm, brilliant turquoise water. One of the best beaches on the island.
• Frigate Bay Beach: The most developed option, with chairs, watersports, and the famous "Strip" of beach bars.
• Pinney's Beach, Nevis: If you have time for the 30-minute ferry to Nevis, this long, palm-lined beach is one of the finest in the Caribbean.

• Fisherman's Wharf (Basseterre): Open-air dining right on the waterfront with great local seafood and cold Carib beer.
• Spice Mill (Cockleshell Bay): A stunning beachside restaurant with an open kitchen. Try the jerk lobster with a view of Nevis.

Tips for Cruise Passengers

• You are in port from 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM. An early start is your best friend here.
• Brimstone Hill plus the Scenic Railway is the classic full-day combination and it fills up fast. Book the railway in advance through Celebrity or directly with the Scenic Railway office.
• The vervet monkeys are adorable but do not feed them or approach them. They can bite and are present throughout the island.
