Tips for Traveling Italy

Money & Payments
- Withdraw about €200 from an ATM at Rome airport. Replenish only from ATMs inside bank lobbies.
- When paying, use this order of priority — swiping your card leaves you vulnerable to skimming and should be avoided:
- Apple Pay (most secure and widely accepted)
- Tap your card (secure and convenient)
- Cash (no fraud risk, but not always practical and we don't usually carry large amounts)
- Swipe (last resort only)
- Always choose to be charged in EUR, not USD.
- Keep a backup credit card separate from your primary — ideally one each, stored apart from one another.
Safety & Awareness
Italy is very safe, but like any destination, opportunists target crowded areas.
- Keep purses crossbody and in front; wallets in front pockets.
- Don’t leave your phone on café tables.
- Be mindful in high-traffic spots such as Trevi Fountain and train stations.
- Politely decline if approached by strangers offering to take your photo or “show you something.”
Passports & Documents
- Italian law requires you to carry your passport.
- Take a photo for your phone and leave a printed copy in the hotel.
- Keep an additional copy with family at home.
- Passports are usually only needed at hotels, but random checks do occur. Backups make replacement much easier.
Dining Culture
- Step away from restaurants with staff calling you in—piazzas are wonderful for a glass of wine, but the best meals are usually nearby side streets.
- Types of dining:
- Osteria – casual, family-run, local specialties.
- Trattoria – informal but broader menu, mid-range pricing.
- Ristorante – formal, more elegant, wider menu.
- Reservations: With the Jubilee drawing record visitors this year, book ahead (even for lunch). Use OpenTable, Google Reservations, or TheFork app.
- Tipping: A euro or two is sufficient. For finer dining, 5–10% is customary, unless “servizio” (service) is already included on your bill.
- Pace: Meals are leisurely. Expect the bill (“Il conto, per favore”) to take time—it’s part of the culture.
Gelato Etiquette
- Some shops require you to pay first and then present a ticket at the counter. Observe the flow or ask if unsure.
Phones & Connectivity
- If you’d like assistance with mobile data or calling options, I’m happy to provide recommendations.
- WhatsApp: Be sure to have WhatsApp installed on your phone before traveling. Many drivers, guides, and even hotels and restaurants in Italy use it for quick, reliable communication.
Other Helpful Phone Apps
- Google Maps (download offline maps) – Reliable for walking directions, public transport, and finding shops or restaurants.
- Google Translate (download Italian offline) – Handy for menus, signs, and short conversations.
- Trenitalia / Italo – If you’re traveling by train, these apps make it easy to view schedules and manage tickets.
- FreeNow / IT Taxi – Useful in larger cities to request taxis without searching for a stand.
