Day 3: Monday, June 14 - Rialto Market and the Challenges of Tourism (Local Guide, Vaporetto ticket)
This morning you’ll meet your guide and head to the Rialto Market on Venice’s Grand Canal, a place where locals go in the early mornings to buy fresh fruits, vegetables, and
seafood. Despite its location near the immensely popular Rialto Bridge, this market
retains its authentic charm and offers an informative peek into local life.
Next, visit the historic Squero San Trovaso, one of the last traditional gondola
workshops in Venice. Get a rare glimpse into the ancient craft of gondola building,
where artisans in this workshop still build by hand as they’ve done for centuries.
Afterwards, meet with an academic or community member to discuss sustainable
tourism, and to learn about the significant challenges that Venice continues to face in
trying to manage tourism while maintaining its history, character, and sense of
community.
The remainder of your final day and evening are free to explore at your leisure.
