I recommend flying in at least one day prior to the start of your land package to help avoid any travel delays. While it’s not as critical as arriving before a cruise departure, arriving early ensures you don’t miss any portion of your land tour and gives you time to relax before your itinerary begins.
Additionally, spending extra time in Fairbanks allows you to take advantage of unique excursions not offered elsewhere. One highlight is an old-fashioned steamboat tour that visits the kennel of an Iditarod dog sledding champion and stops at Chena Village, where you can explore the traditional lifestyle of early Athabascan people.
If you’re traveling in mid-August through September, you may also have the opportunity to join a late evening excursion to a remote yurt for Northern Lights viewing—a truly unforgettable experience. Arriving a day early would give you enough time to participate in these excursions through the lodge, two days would allow you to participate without feeling rushed.
