Ketchikan is Alaska's first impression for most cruise passengers, and it delivers. The largest collection of standing totem poles in the world is here, the rainforest comes right down to the water's edge, and the town's rowdy fishing-and-logging heritage gives it an authenticity that's increasingly rare in popular cruise ports. Creek Street - a row of historic buildings perched on wooden pilings over a salmon stream - is one of the more genuinely quirky walks in Alaska. The Misty Fiords National Monument, accessible by floatplane or boat, is one of the most dramatically beautiful places in the country.
What we'd suggest: The Totem Heritage Center for genuine cultural depth, Creek Street for atmosphere, and a floatplane excursion to Misty Fiords if you want the experience you'll describe for years.
