Bequia is the largest of the Grenadine islands and has a loyal following among sailors and independent travelers who value its low-key pace and genuine local character. Port Elizabeth is the main settlement, wrapped around Admiralty Bay, which is consistently ranked among the most beautiful anchorages in the Caribbean. The island has a strong maritime heritage, a small art scene, and very little of the resort development that has changed so many other Caribbean islands.
Port and City Relationship
Ships tender into Admiralty Bay. The dock in Port Elizabeth is right in the heart of town, with the main strip of shops, restaurants, and boat services immediately accessible. Everything central is walkable.
What to See, Do and Eat Nearby
Princess Margaret Beach and Lower Bay Beach are both within walking distance or a short water taxi ride from the tender dock and are some of the best beaches on the itinerary. The Model Boat Workshop on Front Street is a Bequia institution where you can watch local craftsmen build intricate handmade boats. A small donation or purchase supports the craft. The Frangipani Hotel's waterfront bar is the social hub of Admiralty Bay and a great spot for a rum punch. Mac's Pizzeria is beloved by visiting sailors and serves surprising thin-crust pizza in a casual, open setting. Prices are modest across the island, with meals typically running 30 to 50 XCD ($11 to $18 USD).
Getting Around
Water taxis cross Admiralty Bay frequently and are the easiest way to reach some of the beaches. A ride across the bay runs about 5 to 10 XCD ($2 to $4 USD). Dollar buses, which are small vans, cover routes around the island for just a few dollars. Taxis are available for hire if you want to see more of the island, with a half-day tour running around 150 to 200 XCD ($55 to $74 USD).
