Saint George's is widely considered one of the most picturesque harbor towns in the Caribbean, and it earns that reputation. The town climbs steeply around a horseshoe-shaped inner harbor called the Carenage, lined with Georgian warehouses, small fishing boats, and colorful buildings stacked up the hillside. Grenada is known as the Spice Island for its production of nutmeg, mace, cinnamon, and cocoa, all of which you will encounter in the markets and rum shops throughout the day.
Port and City Relationship
Ships dock at the Melville Street Cruise Terminal on the outer harbor. A short walk or water taxi ride across the Carenage brings you into the heart of town. Everything in central Saint George's is walkable from the terminal.
What to See, Do and Eat Nearby
Fort George sits above the Carenage and offers some of the best views of the harbor and town. Entry is free. The Grand Anse Beach, Grenada's most famous stretch of sand, is about 10 minutes by taxi south of town and is a genuine standout. Taxi to Grand Anse runs around 20 to 25 XCD ($7 to $9 USD) each way. The Grenada National Museum covers the island's history from colonial times to independence. Entry is around 5 XCD ($2 USD). For food, BB's Crabback on the Carenage waterfront is excellent for local seafood and has great views. De Big Fish is another solid option for lunch near the waterfront. Spice shopping at the public market, where vendors sell fresh nutmeg, cinnamon sticks, and handmade spice bags, is a must.
Getting Around
Taxis are plentiful at the terminal and are the standard way to get around beyond town. Water taxis across the Carenage are a quick, inexpensive option. A full half-day tour of the island, including Grand Anse, the nutmeg processing station at Gouyave, and a waterfall stop, typically runs around 150 to 200 XCD ($55 to $74 USD) per taxi.
