Scarborough is the capital of Tobago, the smaller and significantly quieter of the two islands that make up Trinidad and Tobago. While Trinidad is known for Carnival and commerce, Tobago draws visitors looking for natural beauty, strong local culture, and beaches that haven't been overrun. Scarborough itself is a working port town with a lively market, a hillside fort, and easy access to some of the best reef snorkeling in the southern Caribbean.
Port and City Relationship
Ships dock at the Scarborough Deep Water Harbour, close to the center of town. The main market, fort, and town streets are within walking distance of the pier.
What to See, Do and Eat Nearby
Fort King George sits above Scarborough and offers impressive views over the harbor and the Caribbean Sea. Entry is free and the walk up takes about 15 minutes. The Tobago Museum inside the fort is small but well done. Entry is around 10 TTD ($1.50 USD). Pigeon Point Heritage Park, about 20 minutes west by taxi, is one of Tobago's most iconic beaches, with a thatched jetty that appears on postcards across the island. Entry to the beach is 50 TTD ($7.50 USD). Store Bay, closer to the airport, is less manicured but beloved by locals for its food stalls selling crab and dumpling, the island's signature dish. Bonkers Restaurant near the harbor is a reliable local choice for lunch with good roti and fresh fish. A taxi to Pigeon Point runs around 100 to 150 TTD ($15 to $22 USD) each way.
Getting Around
Taxis are the main option from the port. Route taxis (shared) are very cheap but require some local knowledge of routes. A private taxi for a half-day tour covering Pigeon Point, Store Bay, and the Sunday School area runs around 400 to 500 TTD ($59 to $74 USD). Most drivers are friendly and knowledgeable about the island.
