Tour: The Original 4WD Adventure – Skippers Canyon
Join a half‑day heritage 4WD tour following the historic and once‑treacherous Skippers Road, carved by hand into the cliffs of the Shotover River Valley. As your experienced guide navigates the canyon, you’ll see numerous historic sites including a century‑old suspension bridge and the former gold‑mining township of Skippers.
Visit the restored Schoolhouse to learn about local heritage through photos and relics, explore remaining buildings and the cemetery, and stop at Deep Creek to try your luck panning for gold in one of the world’s richest gold‑bearing rivers.
The tour departs Queenstown and climbs toward Coronet Peak for panoramic Wakatipu Basin views. After entering Skippers Canyon, visit Lighthouse Rock lookout and cross the historic Skippers Bridge before continuing to the township.
